week of May21-May27
Hello friends! After a week of delay of my arrival and all the hustle, I finally arrived in World Friendship Center in Hiroshima on a sunny afternoon on May 20th. Mr. Otto came to pick me up from the bus station and directed me back to the WFC. I felt like home immediately.
Because of jet lag, this week I have been waking up automatically at 5am in the morning. Even though it's so early in the morning I could already hear people outside chatting and TV sounds coming out of their home—Japanese people’s days start off way earlier than I thought. Along with my stay for this week, there were also 10 students from Pennsylvania here to do a study tour in Hiroshima. We went onto a peace tour in the city shortly after breakfast. The weather is nice and the sun is shiny, and so we decided to walk to the museum instead of taking the streetcar.
Some monuments we saw that were truly amazing:
We also went to the peace museum. There I learnt what happened in the Atomic bombing, how it happened, and what damages it's caused to the Hiroshima people, even till today.
Highlight of the week: Okonomiyaki--it's a dish that Hiroshima is famous for. Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) literally means "grilled as you like it", and is a savory Japanese pancake, loaded with veggies that can be customized based on what you have in the fridge. That’s why it’s sometimes known as a “Japanese pizza” in the US.
